Description:
Sedna, goddess of the arctic sea, controls the sea mammals and the balance of life and death in the cold north. She began as a beautiful young woman, courted by many, but none pleased her father. Then a mysterious stranger appeared, claiming to be a great king in the north, convinced her father to let them marry. Sedna went to live with her new husband only to discover that he was a cruel Skua (sometimes Raven) in disguise. She called for help from her father who came to her aid and as they escaped in a small canoe, the Skua sent a terrible storm to topple them. Sedna fell into the water and clung to the side of the canoe to keep from drowning. Her father, fearing that they might both die, cut her fingers off so she sank down into the icy depths. As she sank, her severed fingers became seals, walruses, porpoises, dolphins, polar bears, whales, and sea otters. She became an important figure for the hunters of the north who relied on her generosity to survive. If Sedna felt slighted, she would call her sea animals to her and the people would starve. So unique!
Antony Galbraith replied:
Thanks Elizabeth. The myths of Sedna have intrigued me for some time. There isn't a lot of imagery out there exploring her, so I felt the need to connect and see what emerged.

Antony Galbraith replied:
Thanks Debra. This piece really began with the face, it was quite clear in my mind from the beginning. As I worked on it, and she emerged on the paper, I just felt so connected to her story in a very symbolic way.

There we go, don't make a very powerful female mad! LOL But seriously, your piece was masterfully done. I love your choice of this powerful female rather than a more common one such as an Amazon. I love the transition from hair to sea animals. And the combination of graphite with watercolor & what I'm guessing is black ink outlining. BTW, when are u going to do an Amazon for us also? ;-) Congratulations on your well-deserved sale! All the best.
Antony Galbraith replied:
Thanks Joyce. The myth of Sedna had been inexplicably haunting me for over a year. I finally decided I better work on the painting and explore what She was trying to teach me. This painting also is a new direction in style and materials for me. For example, using the graphite with the watercolor and also the finishing process of mounting the paintings on board and sealing with a UV varnish. An Amazon? Well, if the spirit of one calls me, I will answer!

This peace is VERY beautiful. I am minimalist at heart, and appreciate the thought and preparation that went into this piece. Most importantly, as a Native American who loves his culture and beliefs, I think this is a very repsectful image and capture the tue essence of Sedna. The tribe up North where Her story originates, believes in Her to this day and still conducts themselves in respect to Her. She is held in such hugh regard that images of her are usually only represented by effigy. ANY image of her is Sacred. To the artist: thank you for approaching this with such mindfulness of heart and spirit.
Antony Galbraith replied:
Thank you very much Nick. For me, my art is about discovery, connecting and understanding the world we all live in (and that can be one of many worlds). Often times the painting calls to me, asking to be made. It is my job to do my best at creating what is being requested. For me, a painting like this brings me closer to the intricate weaving of peoples that inhabit the planet. For others, it is my hope that the work brings inspiration, insight, and maybe a little wonder at the richness of our world(s).
